SYNOPSIS
Story Overview
A playful, profound musical journey that asks what would happen if the Book of Genesis was told on a Black family’s front porch.
In De Beginnin’ reimagines the Creation story with humor, humanity, and a fierce sense of cultural pride. Set against a backdrop of spirituals, jazz, and funk-infused gospel, the musical brings together elders, children, angels, and everyday folks as they debate, question, and celebrate how the world—and our people—came to be.
With an intergenerational cast and a score that moves from sacred to streetwise, the piece captures Oscar Brown Jr.’s signature blend of social commentary, family storytelling, and musical innovation.
