Late in the 1950’s and early 60’s Oscar Brown, Jr. started out in songwriting, developing his talent for setting swinging, intellectually impressive lyrics to classic tunes by some of the most renown jazz musicians. Brown’s catalog reveals a thoughtful and versatile wordsmith. Several of his lyrics have become “standards” in vocal jazz guidebooks used in the industry: Dat Dere, All Blues, Afro Blue, being among the most widely known.  OBJ’s songs have been recorded by a wide list of stellar recording artists, many of which are listed here.
