Dead Reckoning

We all wonder

As we blunder

Through a plot that’s plodding past

Whose direction are we under

In the parts in which we’re cast?

Playing roles that can be taxing

Forcing us to be on cue

In the scenes we are enacting

So our characters ring true

Each is hero of a drama

We do not know much about

This fantastic panorama

For which we did not try out

We use any information

To which we have gotten hipped

It is all improvisation

Since nobody has a script

I’ll be trying

Till my dying

To give my part more to mean

Like most people, I’ll be vying

Now and then to steal a scene

Since before me, I see glory

I see fortune I see fame

Adding meaning to my story

And importance to my name

So I show off like I know of

Some way I’ll receive a cheer

After I, with all my ego’ve

Been deceased to long to hear

But I allow

I don’t see how

Important it will be

If I am dead and take a bow

No one alive will see

I am driven

While I’m livin’

To just keep on keeping on

But no idea am I given

Where I’m going once I’m gone

It is knowing

I am going

As I get along in years

That has apprehension growing

Aggravating mortal fears

Of my fleeing

From my being

My departure from this world

Of the void that I keep seeing

Into which all life is hurled

Why be annoyed

Though by a void

That now appears to me

Just like the void my life enjoyed

Before it came to be?

So being wise

We improvise

With what we are equipped

Soon as we come to realize

Nobody has a script

But I allow

I don’t see how

Important it will be

If I am dead and take a bow

No one alive will see

Why be annoyed

Though by a void

That now appears to me

Just like the void my life enjoyed

Before it came to be?
